**In short:** Cybersecurity in logistics is about portals that are needed around the clock: shipment tracking, time-slot booking, order entry. Clarify which of them run on PHP, have the patch and restart confirmed, and keep a manual fallback route ready in case a portal has to go offline temporarily.

## Which PHP systems run in logistics and freight forwarding

The transport management system itself is often industry software with its own operation. Around it arise web applications that are frequently based on PHP: customer portals for order entry and shipment tracking, time-slot and ramp booking for suppliers and carriers, portals for subcontractors, proofs of delivery with photo upload, damage reports and careers pages for drivers.

Many of these applications are in-house developments based on frameworks or run in containers. With containers, PHP is part of the image. How to update correctly there is described on the page [Patching PHP in Docker containers](https://phpsos.de/en/php2shell/docker-container-patchen/).

## Which data sits in logistics portals

Logistics portals hold delivery and collection addresses, shipment contents and goods values, time slots, licence plates, drivers' names and phone numbers, customer terms and billing data. Through interfaces, the portals are connected to the TMS, warehouse management, telematics and clients' systems.

This mix is particularly valuable to attackers. Anyone who knows when which high-value load stands at which ramp can prepare theft or forged collections. Credentials for interfaces also open the way to partners in the supply chain.

Driver data deserves attention too. Careers pages and subcontractor portals contain copies of driving licences, proof of qualifications and contact details, partly from drivers abroad who find little support if their data is misused. Anyone who collects these documents on the web server should not keep them there longer than necessary.

## Logistics and cybersecurity: consequences of an incident

- **Standstill at the ramp:** If time-slot booking fails, vehicles pile up and supply chains stall.
- **Manipulated orders:** An attacker with access to the portal can change delivery addresses or collection authorisations.
- **Supply chain:** Clients demand information on whether their data or interfaces are affected. Under [NIS2](https://phpsos.de/en/compliance/nis2/), reporting duties are added for companies concerned.
- **Trust:** In a sector with close partnerships, an incident quickly gets around.

> **Act now:**
> If nobody can confirm that PHP on your portal server is patched and restarted, take the portal offline and switch to the manual fallback route. Until the patch, [virtual patching](https://phpsos.de/en/leistungen/waf-virtuelles-patching/) can be a bridge, but it does not replace the update.

## Typical responsibility gaps in logistics companies

| System | Often looked after by | Open question |
|---|---|---|
| TMS and warehouse management | Software vendor | Which web components use PHP? |
| Customer and time-slot portal | In-house development or service provider | Who patches the image or server? |
| Website and careers page | Agency and host | PHP status confirmed? |
| Interfaces to clients | IT department | Which credentials sit on web servers? |

In freight forwarders with several locations, local solutions come on top, which a branch set up itself and which appear in no central directory.

## Partner access: many accounts, little overview

Logistics portals live off external users: carriers, subcontractors, suppliers, customers with several locations. Over the years this produces hundreds of accounts, many of them shared, orphaned or protected with simple passwords. An attacker who executes code on the server does not need these accounts, but can create new ones or extend the rights of existing ones without it being noticed.

After an incident, therefore, also check user management: which accounts were created or changed most recently, which have extended rights, which have not been used for months? Lock orphaned accounts and secure administrator access with a second factor. This also belongs in the coordination with clients who have access to your portals.

## The first hours for IT management and the executive board

1. List all externally reachable portals, including container applications and solutions run by branches.
2. For each system, have PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35, or a confirmed backport, and the restart of all processes demonstrated.
3. Preserve logs from 20 October 2026 onward. Guidance on analysis is given in the guide [Analysing web server logs](https://phpsos.de/en/ratgeber/logfiles-auswerten/).
4. Renew credentials for interfaces stored on web servers after the cleanup.
5. Inform important clients factually as soon as the status is documented.

## How does PHP SOS help?

- We record your portals and interfaces and prioritise by operating mode, PHP version and importance to operations.
- We patch, or coordinate updates with software vendors and service providers, rebuild container images and document the restart.
- If you suspect a problem, we take over [incident response](https://phpsos.de/en/leistungen/incident-response/) with evidence preservation and a check on whether orders or interfaces were manipulated.
- We deliver concise, verifiable documentation that you can present to clients, insurers and, where applicable, authorities.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why is shipment data interesting to attackers?**
Shipment data reveals which goods are where and when, and who collects them. Such information can be used for cargo theft, forged collection orders or fraud with fake carriers. Added to this are customer master data and terms, which are valuable to competitors.

**Does our freight forwarding company fall under NIS2?**
The transport sector is among the areas covered by NIS2, but whether a company is actually affected depends on its activity and size. Even without a direct obligation, clients pass security requirements on through contracts. You clarify the binding classification with your legal counsel.

**How do operations continue if the portal is offline?**
Keep a manual fallback route ready: time slots by phone or email, status updates through a prepared distribution list, collection numbers on paper. A planned fallback route prevents staff from taking insecure shortcuts under pressure.

**Our PHP applications run in containers. Does that change anything?**
In containers, too, PHP is part of the image. You have to update the base image, rebuild it and replace the running containers. An update on the host alone changes nothing about the PHP in the container.
